Cozy Mystery Review: A Scone to Die For

ASconetoDieFor

A Scone to Die For is the first mystery in the Oxford Tearoom Mysteries by H.Y. Hanna. For cozy mystery lovers this is a promising start to a series. There are two more books in the series: Tea with Milk and Murder, and Two Down, Bun to Go.

In A Scone to Die for, we meet Gemma Rose, an escapee from the corporate world who has returned to her home in Oxford to open a tearoom. When an obnoxious American tourist is found dead in her tearoom and she and her employees come under suspicion, her fledgling business flounders under the publicity. Not about to go under without a fight, Gemma decides to do some unofficial investigating. Aided by the Old Biddies — a crew of old ladies who will make you laugh out loud — and her best friend, Gemma searches for clues that take her into Oxford University itself. In pursuit of the truth, she’ll go up against her old college flame who is now a CID Inspector and even more good-looking than before.

This is a delightful cozy that immerses you in the English countryside and the august halls of Oxford. Clues are sprinkled lightly throughout, enough to keep you guessing without giving it all away. Since it’s an English cozy, don’t be surprised that it uses British punctuation and spelling. It’s all part of the charm.
